My town, Orastie – Romania

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Our town, Orastie, has been attested since 782. Historians found signs that these places had been inhabited for 7000 years .
Through time the town had a number of names like: Waros(1224) , Broos(1425) , Saxopolis(in the middle of the XVI century ), Szaszvaros(1577) , Orastie(1582)
The town is 404 kms away from Bucuresti , our country’s capital ) ,90 kms away from Sibiu , 162  Km away from Timisoara , and is situated in the western part of Romania in the region called Transilvania.
The climate is temperate-continental.
2000 years ago in the Orastie mountains used to be Dacia’s capital , Sarmizegetusa . Dacia was ruled by Burebista and after his death Decebal became king . In 102 the Roman emperor Traian passed through the Orastie area to conquer Decebal’s castles .The romans conquered Dacia leaving a lot of Roman sites and the ruins of Sarmizegetusa which you can still see .
In 1324 , Carol Robert d’ Anjou gives Orastie the title of town . In 1852 Orastie is being named a fortress ,the well-known Turkish historian Evlia Celesi wrote about it .The fortress had thick stone walls and special draw-bridges . On one of the gates you could see the inscription “ It’s sweet to die for your country”
Besides a rich history our town has  important cultural traditions :
In 1582 in Orastie was printed “Palia de la Orastie “ one of the first writings in Romanian.
In 1882 Aurel Vlaicu was born here , world known person for his inventions in aeronautics , today a high-school bears his name.
In fact all schools in Orastie bear the name of important people in our town’s history.
There were a lot of books written about our town’s history and culture , from which we remembered just a few facts.
Today our town has approximately 22.000 people living in it ,most of them are Romanians but there are also Hungarians, Germans and other nationalities living in Orastie. The dominant religion in our town is Christians but there are also a number of other religions . Orastie is a small town situated in a mountainous area filled with history and traditions .Presenting our town is a theme that we can discuss in more letters.
